The Chicago Bears have been mentioned over and over again as a possible destination for Cam Newton in 2020. The likelihood of the Bears trading for Newton is unlikely.

Since before the trade deadline, many people have been linking the Chicago Bears as a possible destination for Cam Newton in 2020. With the Carolina Panthers clearly looking to do a mini-rebuild, Cam Newton looks to be out the door after this season. Trade rumors have been swirling for over a month now despite Kyle Allen‘s recent struggles.

Reports came out today that the Panthers are planning on holding out for a large trade deal for Cam Newton. If there is any type of market for Cam Newton, the Chicago Bears are not going to be in the running. Many “insiders” will report that the Bears are interested in Newton this offseason, but I would not fall for it.

Cam Newton is having surgery on his foot in hopes to push up his recovery timetable for 2020. Newton will be in the final year of his contract in 2020. He is due just under $19 million, which is relatively cheap for a quarterback. The team is willing to hold onto him for that price, but I am sure they would rather receive some trade compensation for a player that is not likely in their future.

Trade compensation is not something the Bears can afford. The team does not have a first-round pick this season. Instead, they have two second-round picks this year. The Bears would have to dive into their 2021 stash in order to offer a first for Newton. Bringing in Newton for that high of a price makes zero sense for this team.

In fact, I am not sure the Bears should give up just a single second-round pick for Newton at this point in his career. Newton is going to be 31 and coming off a Lisfranc injury to his foot. The surgery should help, but I would rather the Bears use their second-round pick to draft some interior lineman on both sides of the ball or another EDGE rusher.

The Bears will have plenty of options to strengthen their quarterback room for 2020. If the Panthers want a plethora of draft picks, the Bears need to just hang up the phone.
