Can we please stop comparing Mitchell Trubisky to this quarterback?

The comparison of Mitchell Trubisky to this quarterback is unwarranted, yet many analysts like to link the two together anyway.

As a Chicago Bears fan who wanted Ryan Pace to draft Deshaun Watson at number three overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, one would wonder why I am defending Mitchell Trubisky. Here’s the thing. I can see why Pace fell in love with Trubisky. He is a natural leader who earns the respect of his teammates. He was inexperienced, but he showed great skills as a passer and a runner.

Making Trubisky the face of the franchise was an easy decision. Despite Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes outshining him on the field, no one can deny Trubisky’s locker room presence. His teammates and coaches defend him at every turn and this is why I would not be surprised if they decide to pick up his fifth-year option.

Furthermore, the quarterback room will be different in 2020 than it has been the last two years, but I am not expecting drastic changes. Pace should (and better) draft a quarterback in the 2020 draft. Jake Fromm or Jalen Hurts could be an option in the second round. The team could also draft more of a developmental pick on day three. I am starting to think that is the route Pace takes.

This rambling will make sense in just a minute I promise. Although I wanted Watson, I quickly became a Trubisky hopefull and supporter. His 2018 season led me to believe I was right to jump on board despite the MVP performance of Mahomes. Unfortunately, his 2019 season has not lived up to expectations. Fans have quickly jumped off the Trubisky ship and have demanded change. Analysts (and sites) have doubled down on the Trubisky hatred as an “I told you so” statement.

I understand the hatred and disappointment. However, as I stated in my recent article comparing Trubisky to others, we need more patience. Trubisky has shown enough flashes that I would continue to give him the opportunities to try and succeed. This goes beyond his last few weeks and brings me to my point. I am tired of hearing how Mitchell Trubisky is the next Blake Bortles and here are the reasons why anyone who believes this is just wrong.
