Mitchell Trubisky and Matt Nagy both have struggled this season, and both have been destroyed by the media after a rough start to 2019. I expect both to be back with the Chicago Bears in 2020 though. What can we expect?
After winning the NFC North last year in Matt Nagy’s first season as head coach of the Chicago Bears, people expected the Bears to win the NFC North again in 2019 and potentially represent the NFC in the Superbowl. However, that will not be happening due to the fact Nagy and Mitchell Trubisky have been rocky all season. It seemed that Nagy didn’t trust Trubisky like he did last year.
Although the Bears need to address many things during the offseason, Ryan Pace should not go out and find a replacement for Trubisky nor should he find yet another head coach. I truly believe that both Trubisky and Nagy will be back in 2020.
Bears fans were calling for Trubisky to get benched and Chase Daniel to be the starting quarterback for the rest of the season. After having a rough first half, Nagy has finally felt confident in Trubisky over the last five weeks and confidence leads to success. Trubisky has been a different quarterback in the last five games and many Bears fans have changed their minds on what they think of him.
With three games left this season, Trubisky is 7-5 as a starter, has thrown 16 touchdowns, eight interceptions and has 2,440 passing yards. He also has 143 rushing yards with two rushing touchdowns. Ever since they moved Cody Whitehair back to the center position, Trubisky has seemed a lot more confident and comfortable in the pocket.
One reason why Trubisky has struggled is that the wide receivers have not been able to hold onto the ball. The Chicago Bears lead the league in dropped passes this season. Furthermore, the offensive line has been absolutely abysmal. The unit has been dealing with injuries all year. Kyle Long went on injured reserve and the team has been without right tackle Bobby Massie. Nevertheless, the offensive line has played better over the last couple of games.
Nagy is a completely different story. His playcalling has been terrible. He did not let David Montgomery run the ball until it seemed like late October. He seems to think that Tarik Cohen is an every-down back, which he clearly is not. All Cohen can do is catch the ball out of the backfield.
After 2019, the Chicago Bears need to address a lot in the offseason if they plan on Trubisky being a successful quarterback like he was in 2018. First thing, they need a new offensive coordinator. Mark Helfrich is not that guy and should be someone who is a “proven” play-caller because Nagy should not be the one calling the plays. Maybe it’s time for a new quarterback coach as well?
They need to address the offensive line problems too. Kyle Long does not need to be on this team anymore. He is 31 years old and has been dealing with nonstop injuries over the past four years. Maybe draft a couple of offensive lineman during the 2020 NFL draft? Maybe give Alex Bars a real shot at playing offensive line in the NFL? Something is better than what they have right now.
Ryan Pace needs to address the tight end position also. Trey Burton just isn’t the guy that we expected he would be. Maybe J.P Holtz is ready to take the starting tight end position? Still, I think they need to at least draft one tight end that Trubisky can trust since obviously he’ll be the one throwing the ball to him.
I do not think a wide receiver is a “must” need during the offseason, but the guys they do have need to focus and catch the ball better. The Chicago Bears have Allen Robinson, Anthony Miller, Taylor Gabriel, Riley Ridley, and Javon Wims. Trubisky should feel pretty confident with that core of wide receivers heading into 2020.
During the preseason, Nagy needs to let Trubisky play. Look at how he started the 2019 season. He started off rusty and that is because Trubisky hardly saw the field during the preseason. We cannot let that happen once again.
If the Chicago Bears start off better than they did in 2019, I feel pretty confident that this team will be in the playoffs in 2020. If Ryan Pace addresses what this team needs during the offseason, then I feel pretty confident that both Nagy and Trubisky will be successful in 2020.
