5 Free Agent Cornerbacks for Chicago Bears to consider
Trae Waynes-Minnesota
The Bears could go, and probably should go for someone younger at the position and the 28-year-old Wayans may a go-to person for the defense this offseason. Wayans has been in the league for five years all five with the Minnesota Vikings. He has intercepted one pass and recovered one fumble. He has played in 73 games since coming into the league starting 52 of them (through Week 16 in 2019).
Chicago Bears
A former first-round pick, Waynes has had his ups and downs. As a player, he has a lot of potential and with the right team could do some good. We see that he can tackle and cover well, at times, and that his coverage rates are improving almost every year he has been in the league. Waynes can also play the run well at times.
Being in the same division as the Bears could help him get some notice from the Bears. If they were to pick him up, they would not only have a better starter at cornerback but would also have someone from within the division that knows a little bit about his team and the other teams that the Bears play. That could be a huge advantage (similar to what the Packers did with Arian Amos getting a solid safety and some key information from a division rival).
While Waynes may not seem like a great prospect to some, he has some untapped potential that the Bears could use to help them fill the cornerback slot that will be potentially vacated by Amukamara. I think he would be valuable to the Bears and that signing him, if the Vikings or someone else don’t first, would go a long way toward helping their defense.
