Should the Chicago Bears extend Chase Daniel or let him walk this offseason

The Chicago Bears enter the offseason with serious decisions to make at the quarterback position. That goes well beyond Mitch Trubisky to the backup and third-string quarterback. This starts with Chase Daniel.

Daniel spent the last two seasons with the Bears and is 1-2 as a starter, with a win coming in on the first drive against the Vikings as well. Entering the offseason, should the Bears extend him, or let him walk.

Sign

He has continuity with the playbook and provides a clear backbone for Mitch Trubisky. He has shown that while he is limited, he can find ways to protect the football and keep his team in games. It is tough to find backups.

Pass

Whether he is the starter or enters camp in a competition, Mitch Trubisky will be on the roster in 2020. With that in mind, they cannot go into 2020 with the same quarterback room. That means letting Daniel walk.

Daniel is around to support Trubisky. They need a backup who is ready to push Trubisky. Whether that is a rookie or a veteran starter,

Verdict

This one is much less of a toss-up. You can understand that this move will not sit well with Matt Nagy or Mitch Trubisky, as they are very comfortable with Daniel.

However, the results of 2019 have to lead to some change. Neither of those two will fall so Daniel has to be changed to shake up this room. Adding a higher leverage veteran to push Trubisky rather than play to his strengths in the quarterback room can bring out the best in Trubisky.

It also may help to get a name in that did not live and breath the Matt Nagy system, so that they can get new ideas flowing into the room.

If Daniel is back, this offseason will feel like a disappointment.
