1. Mike Kafka

When you break down all of the candidates, Mike Kafka makes the most sense. To start, of course, he has the Andy Reid connection. This one goes deeper, though. He played for the Eagles as a backup quarter when Matt Nay was an offensive assistant in Philadelphia.

Nagy got promoted to quarterbacks coach after his time with Kafka, but given Nagy’s role with the team, he spent a lot of time in the process of drafting Kafka, developing Kafka, and obviously preparing the offense together as Kafka did what any backup would do. They have surely had plenty of discussions.

On top of that, Kafka is from Chicago and went to school in Northwestern. Offensive coordinator in Chicago is likely a dream job for him.

Kafka found work after his brief NFL stint and has been with the Chiefs since 2016. He was around as interim type role, but was promoted in 2017 to the coaching staff.  Essentially when Reid lost Matt Nagy, he started to put Kafka on the same path. Kafka is currently the quarterback’s coach.

The Chiefs would have to allow Kafka to go, but Reid would likely sign off, so long as he does not plan to promote him to offensive coordinator. Eric Bienemy may get a head coaching gig.

However, if that job is not on the table, Reid would likely allow Kafka a chance at a promotion in his home town. Nagy obviously is familiar with him and the two likely have a special bond from Kafka’s rookie season.

If the Bears hire an obvious name who is familiar with Nagy, it is going to be Kafka.
