It looks like the Chicago Bears are starting to make moves even before the official start of free agency. It has been reported that the Bears have agreed to terms with tight end Demetrius Harris, according to National Insider for the NFL Network and NFL.com Ian Rapoport.

This addition is much needed for Chicago’s offense, considering the lack of production that came from the tight end position in 2019. As a unit, the Bears’ tight ends combined for just 46 receptions for 416 yards and two touchdowns in 16 games.

There isn’t much to say about Harris’ six-year career in the NFL, seeing that he has tallied only 72 receptions for 754 yards and nine touchdowns in that span. However, one golden nugget that can be taken from this is the fact that he has some familiarity with head coach Matt Nagy.

Harris played last season with the Cleveland Browns, but he spent the previous five years with the Kansas City Chiefs. While in Kansas City, Nagy was the team’s quarterbacks coach from 2013-15, and then was promoted to offensive coordinator from 2016-17. Harris was a part of the Chiefs’ roster from 2014-18.

This is definitely a far cry from what the Bears could have had if they attempted to at least call tight end Greg Olsen—who is actually on his way to join the Seattle Seahawks. However, this addition does give the tight end position somewhat of an upgrade. Furthermore, it could possibly eliminate one less thing to worry about for the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft.

Only time will tell what this signing means for the likes of Trey Burton, Adam Shaheen, Ben Bruanecker, J.P. Holtz, and Jesper Horsted. But one thing we can assume is that the Bears’ corps of tight ends is going to look a bit different in 2020.
