Should the Chicago Bears sign offensive lineman Joe Haeg?
Joe Haeg has spent his first four NFL seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. If he hits the open market this offseason, he could be a player that the Chicago Bears take a look at. There is no denying their need for guard, and they will explore every avenue. Is Joe Haeg an option?
Sign
Haeg has moved up and down the Colts offensive line. He played right tackle and right guard through his first two seasons, and played right tackle, right guard, and left tackle in 2018, his third year. Last year, he spent some time at left guard.
Overall, he found ways to play every position but center. That type of versatility is going to be valuable for a team like the Bears. Beyond that, the most time he spent was at right guard. He can be signed as a depth piece that does not force their hand at right guard. However, he does not limit their ability to search for upgrades, knowing that they have a versatile depth piece in Haeg.
Pass
2019 was least that Haeg played and as Haeg played less and less, the Colts offensive line got better. He is a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none. When looking at the free-agent market, there is a chance that a team will pay him to be a starter-level player.
The Bears would have to look at him as a depth signing, who could play at right guard if all else fails. If other teams are going to pay him more than that type of money, they should not invest in the veteran depth guard.
