Danny Trevathan

If Danny Trevathan could have found a way to stay healthy during his tenure in Chicago, he might be higher on this list. Trevathan is the captain and voice of the Chicago Bears defense. He is the guy who mans the middle and without him, the defense might not be the same. Nick Kwiatkoski filled in nicely last season after Trevathan was sidelined with an elbow injury, but I am not sure that would be sustainable over a long period of time.

Kwiatkoski is going to get his chance now as he is starting in the middle for the Las Vegas Raiders this season. It will be interesting to compare the two after the season ends. Looking back at Trevathan’s time here in Chicago, he originally signed a four-year, $28 million dollar contract. During those first four years, Trevathan only played one full season.

In his first year, he was put on injured reserve after starting only nine games. He was suspended for a game in 2017 and only started in 12. 2018 was his healthiest season and he played all 16 games. Last year he was put on injured reserve again after starting only nine games. The good news is that his injuries are not recurring.

However, during that time, Trevathan still averaged 82 tackles and 1.5 sacks per season. In the one season he played all 16 games, he recorded 102 combined tackles (76 solos) and eight for loss. The Bears know when he is healthy he gives the team the best chance to win. This is why this offseason the Chicago Bears chose to keep Trevathan over Kwiatkoski. Time will tell if they made the right choice or not. As of now, I would say they did.
