The Chicago Bears potentially ushered in a new era by signing Nick Foles. While most feel the Mitchell Trubsiky era is over, could the signing of Foles be the spark that rejuvenates him as the franchise quarterback he was drafted to be?
It has been a couple of weeks since the Chicago Bears acquired Nick Foles via a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars. For most Bears fans, this was an unwanted move and felt strongly that Ryan Pace should’ve gone elsewhere with his quarterback decision.
Maybe it is me going stir crazy being quarantined, but I am trying to look at this decision with a fresh outlook. What if Foles could be the reason why Mitch Trubisky turns his career around?
There is going to be no valid quarterback competition in camp. The Bears are paying Foles way too much for him to be a backup, but then again they did have Mike Glennon. If there is a “competition” then this will not be one that Trubisky wins.
Stranger things have happened though. Who knows if Foles, who is injury prone, will get hurt or maybe Trubisky will come out to camp looking like the second coming of Tom Brady. What I do know is that Trubisky should use the signing of Foles as motivation and furthermore use him as a mentor.
Trubisky can gain a wealth of knowledge from Foles. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying he’s along the lines of a Dan Marino or Troy Aikman but remember he has not only won a Super Bowl but was the MVP of the game.
Foles can teach Trubisky how to better handle pressure situations and to help him with his mechanics. He can bring a fresh attitude and teaching style for Trubisky too. Foles might not be considered an elite quarterback but he is an experienced one that can help a young, inexperienced (even though he has 3 years under his belt) quarterback like Trubisky.
I’m not giving up on Trubisky yet and feel we should all do the same. He has the skillset and just needs to find the confidence and drive that he lost last season. If he can find those things again and learn the leadership skills from Foles then he can return to his old form. Trubisky was a good quarterback and needs to just retool how he manages and approaches his game. If he follows Foles, he may be able to save his career.
