New England Patriots

It seems that the New England Patriots are very tight on salary-cap space. That said, the team is currently counting on Matt LaCosse to lead their tight end group. It seems to me that Bill Belichick could benefit from a veteran tight end like Trey Burton. Plus, it is rumored the Patriots might trade away Joe Thuney, which would give them nearly $15 million more in cap space.

Burton’s market value is tough to gauge. He had a fairly successful season with the Chicago Bears in 2018. The problem is that his 2019 season was rough and he has been plagued by injuries. The Bears let Burton go now in hopes that he has more opportunities to land with a team and earn the most amount of money he can.

Unfortunately, it does not seem that Burton would earn much with the Patriots. It is more likely that the Patriots draft a tight end and hope for the best. They did a good job with a guy named Rob Gronkowski, but Gronkowski is one of the few rookie tight ends to succeed in his first year. Most tight ends take two to three years to really hit their stride. Trey Burton could be a stopgap for the Patriots on a one year deal for around $2 million.

That is not the amount of money I want to see Burton earn. If the Patriots free up space with the Thuney trade, I would hope he gets closer to that $4 million dollars.
