Chicago Bears Draft: How the Packers unknowingly helped Ryan Pace

The Green Bay Packers traded up for Jordan Love in a move that actually helped the Chicago Bears and Ryan Pace.

The Chicago Bears sat back and watched the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft unfold on Thursday. Ryan Pace kept his hand off the speed dial phone and thank goodness for that. As the draft started, picks went as expected for the most part. Three quarterbacks were taken within the first six selections and that was fantastic news for Pace and the Bears.

Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert were basically locks to go in the first round. Rumors that Jordan Love could potentially go in the first round had been floating around for a while now and as the draft started winding down I was starting to get disappointed. You see, having four quarterbacks picked in the first round would be ideal for a Chicago Bears team that needs an influx of young playmakers, but quarterback early is not likely the case.

With Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles squaring off in a quarterback competition, a second-round pick is not likely to be used on a developmental quarterback like Jalen Hurts or Jacob Eason. What is perfect about four quarterbacks going early is it drives down talent at other positions and allows Pace to land a first-round talent in the second round.

Well to my surprise the Green Bay Packers made a trade from 30th overall to 25th overall and selected Jordan Love. This helps the Bears in more ways than one. First, it means the team likely upset diva quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Any time that happens is a plus. Second, it means the team did not add a first-round offensive weapon for Rodgers and company to pair with Davante Adams. Again, this is a plus for the Chicago Bears.

Finally, it means that more talent at a position of greater need is being pushed down to the Chicago Bears at pick No. 43 and the Packers lost draft capital in the process. How could we not be happy about all of this? Alright, some of you are saying, ugh, not again. This looks just like the Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers situation years ago. How is it that the Packers always make the right move at quarterback?

Well, in my opinion, I think they made a mistake here. I am not a fan of Jordan Love the prospect. I have him behind the likes of Jalen Hurts and Jacob Eason in my rankings. He might wind up being okay, but he will not be the elite talent Rodgers is in his career. I do not fear Love as the future quarterback in Wisconsin. We should not be upset or scared. Bears fans should be happy about what transpired tonight as the Packers unknowingly helped Ryan Pace. Now Pace can’t screw up!
