Green Bay Packers

When you are not first you are last is what fictional racecar drive Ricky Bobby would say. Maybe Packers fans can take solace in this statement since they are literally worst and not second (also worst in Ricky Bobby’s eyes). The thing about this though is I see the Packers draft being so far worse than the other three teams.

The selections and moves they made do not help them enough in 2020 or even 2021. That said, even though I do not agree, the Packers clearly see investment in their future panning out nicely.

Pick No. 26 – Jordan Love, QB – Utah State

I am not high on Jordan Love and therefore my opinion of this pick is even more biased. I had Love as a late-second to early-third round pick. He has some of the tools and measurables you love to see in a quarterback, but he is far too inconsistent for me. Some say they remind them of Patrick Mahomes. Meh, that is a disgrace to Mahomes who has now been a league MVP, Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl MVP within less than four years into his career.

Could Love sit behind Aaron Rodgers for three years and eventually wind up being the next Rodgers? Sure, anything can happen. We all know the Packers have been in this situation before with Brett Favre and Rodgers himself. The thing is, just because they made a similar move does not mean they will strike gold again.

What is worse is the Packers moved up from 30th overall by swapping seconds and sending a fourth (136) round pick to the Dolphins to grab Love. This pick is for the future and not now. The team needs help at wide receiver. Rodgers wants help at wide receiver. Yet, the team ignores the position. Do they want Rodgers to fail?

Pick No. 62 – AJ Dillon, RB – Boston College

To be fair,  this pick is almost a third-rounder. That said, plenty of talent was still on the board. Some believe the team would have taken Denzel Mims if still available, but he went to the Jets at No. 59. Maybe they would have gone Mims, but selecting AJ Dillon here makes little sense and is again more for the future.

The team has Aaron Jones who has looked dominant when healthy (alas he has missed many games) and a decent compliment in Jamaal Williams. Now they add a third running back to the mix. Once again I ask, how does this help the team immediately? Dillon was also not the best running back prospect left on the board. I am perplexed.

Pick No. 94 – Josiah Deguara, TE – Cincinnati

Finally, the Packers take a guy who can actually help Aaron Rodgers in 2020. The thing is, Rodgers just does not rely on his tight ends enough for this pick to matter. The team just sent Jimmy Graham packing and drafted Jace Sternberger in the third round last year.

Josiah Deguara was projected to go on Day 3 of the draft too. Yikes. He is looked at as a possible sleeper, but remember so was Adam Shaheen. This pick was a reach and leaves many Packers fans scratching their heads.

Overall Grade: D (Could be a B+ if Love turns into a franchise quarterback, but doubt it
