The Chicago Bears head coach isn’t the issue the OC is.
There seems to be a change of tune for some over the Chicago Bears head coach. While Matt Nagy is a good head coach, he truly is. Nagy is the ultimate one to blame. Nagy won’t win every game, and he won’t always be liked. He is a great motivator; it seems. But, he 100% deserves all of the blame.
I know many of you have heard the “it’s not all on Mitch” quote from Greg Braggs. Braggs is 100% correct, but it is 100% “all on Nagy.” When you are the head coach, you have a job to make sure everybody else does their job correctly.
Matt Nagy fired some staff members and brought in some new ones. Maybe that will fix his offensive line, tight ends, and running backs. But were they the problem? I think he fired the wrong, offensive staff members.
Matt Nagy should have fired his offensive coordinator. That play-caller for the Chicago Bears was awful. Honestly, the offensive coordinator was horrible in 2018 also. So, Matt Nagy, the head coach is pretty good. Matt Nagy, the offensive coordinator, needs a lot of work. When a play-caller is moving the ball using predictable play calling, such as the I-formation that seemed to help this offense get out of ruts, that’s outstanding.
I don’t know if it is an ego thing or what with Nagy, but he needs to do what works. If that means more I-formation, split/twin backs, and power formations, then so be it. I remember his first play was dedicated to the Chicago Bears’ history by running the T-formation. It worked and was never seen again.
If coach Matt Nagy were to read this, I would only have one thing I would want him to take away from this. Instead of a “be you” motto, I would like to see him “be different.” Run those crazy formations as a base offense. If the pass isn’t working and the run game is, just stick with it. Not just for one game, but the whole season. I want to see your creative mind in the passing game but in the running game as well.
Being different is what allows teams to thrive in the NFL. Much like the T-formation, 46 defense, west coast when it wasn’t popular. Get into those power sets, making them a staple in this offense. Trubisky doesn’t need 40 pass attempts to win a game. If you want to have your offensive line be known as nasty, give them some help with a full back and Cole Kmet. You won’t be disappointed.
