Clay Matthews, Outside Linebacker

It’s quite obvious the Bears have arguably the best starting outside linebackers in the NFL, but they don’t have great depth behind them. Behind them is fifth-round draft pick Trevis Gipson who is viewed as a project. Both Khalil Mack and Robert Quinn will need a break every so often, so why not get a veteran outside linebacker who can help out?

After an illustrious career in Green Bay, Clay Matthews signed with the Los Angeles Rams to help out there pass rush and prove he still can do well. He did just that starting in 13 games sacking the quarterback eight times. That was the most sacks he’s had since 2014 when he had 11 sacks.

A rushing trio of Mack, Quinn, and Matthews would be scary. As soon as one of those needs a break, Matthews would be ready to step in and the rookie Gipson would be able to learn a lot from the three veterans in front of him.

Lastly, the addition of Matthews would give the Chicago Bears some security if one of their star outside linebackers were to go down. A starting duo of Mack or Quinn and Matthews would be much safer than Mack or Quinn and Gipson.

Final Thoughts:

Contrary to popular belief, the Chicago Bears are poised to make a run for the 2020 season. Adding depth, competition, and potentially starters to these key positions could increase those chances even more. They don’t need to add every one of these players to make me happy per se, but adding one or two of these would make the team much more interesting.
