Trevis Gipson

The Bears decided to go for depth at the edge rusher position and took Trevis Gipson in the fifth round. Another player who could be considered a steal, Gipson provides great potential at edge rusher especially with the Bears running a 3-4 scheme. He has great length for the outside linebacker position, where he will be most successful.

Gipson is a project player and has a lot of raw talent that needs to be developed. If there is any team to develop him, it is this Bears team because of the role models he has on that defense. He gets to learn from Khalil Mack, Robert Quinn, and Akiem Hicks.

Expect Gipson to play the Aaron Lynch role from last year. Lynch served as a depth piece to rush the passer from the edge spot as well as dropping into coverage on a few occasions. The Bears opted not to resign him, so it is most likely that Gipson will be that backup edge piece that is so important to a good defense.

If he can show the coaches that he is tapping into his potential, he can definitely earn more playing time. Look for him to contribute on special teams as well as the backup outside linebacker spot. The Bears are high on Gipson, and he looks to be motivated to do great things.
