Chicago Bears: 3 players who are battling for the third running back spot
By Joseph Herff
Napoleon Maxwell – Chicago Bears undrafted free agent
The other undrafted free agent rookie is young, powerful running back Napoleon Maxwell. Maxwell, much like Nall, is a good back in between the tackles with his physicality. Like Pierce, Maxwell never carried a full workload as he was the primary backup at FIU. He only averaged around 10 carries a game.
Maxwell is a very well-rounded running back as well as he can do anything out of the backfield catching passes, pass-block well, and run between the tackles. He isn’t going to burn you like Pierce can as he ran around a 4.6 40 yard dash, but he can quickly locate holes and explode through them with his physicality.
Maxwell is another young, promising guy to compete for this job. With his ability to find holes and burst through them, that can be very lethal at the next level as that isn’t really something you can teach. He hasn’t shown he can carry a workload, but most undrafted running backs haven’t.
Final Thoughts:
Any of these backs could see the field as much as Nall saw last season. On the other hand, one of these backs could emerge as the starter if Montgomery were to go down early and miss the season. As most third-string position battles don’t mean much, it could mean a lot for the Bears. Additionally, they could be looking for another veteran to add during camp if none of these guys emerge as well.
