Chicago Bears: What John DeFilippo brings to the quarterbacks room
Chicago Bears coach brings swagger and passion to the quarterbacks room.
The Chicago Bears head coaching search included an energetic quarterbacks coach from the Philadelphia Eagles, John(Flip) DeFilippo. Coach DeFilippo could be remembered when he was breaking down Carson Wentz‘s play on youtube show “Tape Study.”
Coach DeFilippo is not just an experienced quarterbacks coach; he also was an offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Most might think that he is a failed coach, but he comes with the resume of being the quarterback coach of a Super Bowl MVP in Nick Foles.
Coach DeFilippo also aided in Gardner Minshew II’s solid statistical year, where he completed over 60% of his passes for 3271 yards with 21 touchdowns to only six interceptions. DeFilippo might not be ready for running an entire offense just yet, but he certainly is good at running a quarterbacks room.
During his press conference, he talked about the quarterbacks, and he will bring swagger and energy to the football field. DeFilippo doesn’t lack either of those things. He also expressed the mentality of being the best quarterbacks room in the NFL.
We all know that the Chicago Bears are far from that, but at least someone has that goal in mind already. This press conference was another example of something different from when Mark Helfrich and Dave Ragone were giving their introductory press conferences.
Matt Nagy has seemed to have brought in coaches that stress routines. Defilippo stressed how he wants Trubisky to get into a habit. A method from how Trubisky gets the play in, to checking the play clock, to giving the play with confidence. In the tape study with DeFilippo, there are times where he stresses what Wentz should have been thinking as he walked up to the line of scrimmage.
Coach DeFilippo’s plans for Mitchell Trubisky
These are things DeFilippo wants Trubisky to focus on fixing. DeFilippo also wants to work on things Trubisky does well and to hone in on those skills while getting the stuff he isn’t as good with better. Could Trubisky be working on those things now with his throwing sessions with his teammates?
Trubisky and DeFilippo talked during a zoom meeting about what he does well could be crucial. If Matt Nagy is open to trying new things, he might do what Trubisky does well. Just imagine having two separate offenses that fit the mold for both quarterbacks.
It is not like that can’t be done because the Eagles did it during their Super Bowl run when Carson Wentz ran a spread coast offense with minimal RPO’s because of his inability to scan defenses. When Nick Foles took over for the injured Carson Wentz, Doug Pederson ran an offensive attack that had a lot of RPO’s and full-field reads.
Mitch Trubsky might have a league up as much as people think because ultimately, all of the coaches on offense love Nick Foles. DeFilippo shared how this isn’t the first time that Nick Foles had changed teams.
DeFilippo seems utterly confident in what he can still bring to the table. If Nick Foles can stay healthy for the rest of his career, he sounds like the type of quarterback that could lead a team to multiple playoff runs. There have been numerous quarterbacks that had late runs of success in the NFL to put their name in the hat of stardom. With this coaching staff, Nick Foles could be that next player.
