Chicago Bears: 3 reasons why Nick Foles was still the better call
By Joseph Herff
The Bears can’t pick and choose
Simply put, the Bears can’t just pick any free agent they want and they get him. The player has to agree to a contract, like the destination, etc. Why would the Bears risk not getting a quarterback to compete at all by just trying to sign those guys as free agents?
Sure, Foles could’ve been cut just like Newton or Dalton, but that means any team could add him. I believe Foles would rather join a team that he’s a guaranteed starter over a team he has to fight for the job.
Even in Newton’s scenario. He walks into a team that just made the playoffs and has won six Super Bowl rings in the last 20 years AND he’s the guaranteed starter. Obviously, a free agent is going to choose there over the Bears.
As a separate point related to this, the Bears had to get their guy early. They had to know they were getting it out of the way early on and wouldn’t have to worry about it. They saw the concern and addressed it immediately without overpaying. Even if Foles loses, he is arguably the best backup in the NFL right now and is well worth that price tag.
