Nathan Vasher, CB/Returner
Speaking of memorable returns, most Chicago Bears fans haven’t forgotten about Nathan Vasher‘s 108-yard field goal return against the 49ers in 2005. At the time, this was the longest return in NFL history (Devin Hester would later tie it) and the Bears were beginning a legendary streak of incredible special teams plays.
As a fourth-round pick in 2004, Vasher came in out of Texas as an All-American punt returner and the school’s record holder in interceptions. After an injury to Charles Tillman, he was given the starting spot and thrived in the Bears’ system. In his second year in the league, the same year as his field goal return, he leads the league with eight interceptions and was selected to the pro bowl.
After another strong season cut short because of injuries, the Bears would sign him to a long-term contract. It seemed like they had a great future between him and Tillman. But as the injuries piled up for Vasher, his career just sort of fizzled out and in 2009, he would lose his starting job to Zack Bowman and eventually be cut in 2010.
Another sad story of a player that had so much potential, his career essentially ended there. This is common in the NFL, but it seems to be a yearly occurrence in the Windy City.
