Chicago Bears linebacker Roquan Smith could be Comeback Player of the Year

I don’t know the semantics of this award, but Roquan Smith will likely be heavily considered for the spot in 2020. In a play that was indicative of the type of season Chicago was having, Smith tore his pectoral in week 14, sending him to injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

Despite this missed time, Smith still led a stout Bears defensive unit in tackles and looks like he’ll be an important contributor to this team. Expect him to return with a ferocity that we didn’t see in his first couple of years with the team. So far, he’s shown that he can be a staple on this team, but the real question lies ahead: can he stand out on a star-studded defense?

So far, he hasn’t been able to rack up the headlining stats such as forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, and interceptions. But if he’s able to take the next step forward as a player in year three, he’ll be another reason why teams have to prepare overtime before they see the Chicago Bears on their schedule. At the very least, expect to see this guy in Comeback Player of the Year consideration.
