The Jamal Adams trade negatively affects the Chicago Bears

When I heard about the Jamal Adams trade, my first thought was, wow I wonder what the Jets received for Adams. My second thought was, yikes, this could really be a problem for the Chicago Bears.

The NFL expanded the playoffs by two teams this season — one extra team per conference. This could be extremely important for the Chicago Bears as they play in a tough division and winning it will not be an easy task. This does not mean they will not be playoff contenders. A Wild Card team from the NFC North is definitely a likely scenario.

Watching Jamal Adams jump from the AFC East to the NFC West is a scary thought though, even if the Bears are not in the same division. The Seahawks finished the 2019 season 11-5 and were second in the division behind the San Francisco 49ers. The Seahawks made the playoffs while the Chicago Bears finished 8-8 and watched the playoffs happen while sitting on their couches.

The Bears, although it may not feel this way, were in the playoff hunt most of the 2019 season. If the new playoff format existed in 2019, the Los Angeles Rams, another NFC West team, would have earned the last spot.

Jamal Adams in the NFC could ruin the Chicago Bears playoff dreams

With Adams now in Seattle, that team is one step closer to being Super Bowl contenders. Adams is an elite talent and joins an already talented defense. With his presence, the Seahawks are almost guaranteed one of the seven playoff spots. If we look at the rest of the NFC, there are some teams that stand out as playoff contenders.

Every team in the NFC West has a shot now that DeAndre Hopkins joined the Cardinals this offseason. This is a very scary division. When we look at the NFC North, at least three of the teams, including the Bears, could push for the playoffs. Sorry, I cannot include the Lions. Other teams that come to mind in the NFC as playoff contenders are the Eagles, Cowboys, Saints, and Buccaneers.

The Bears do not play the Seahawks in the regular season in 2020. They could meet in the playoffs though if the Bears find a way in. Without seeing how the 2020 Bears offense performs, I would be fearful of playing the Seahawks now that Adams is in the defensive backfield. I have to say it, this also makes the Bears Super Bowl chances seem less likely too. Unfortunately, the Adams trade could indirectly ruin the Bears 2020 season.
