Positional Value
The Chicago Bears drafted the wrong quarterback. However, you cannot deny that the process was right. When you are in the top five, and you like a quarterback, you have to go get him. This is a situation where the outcome did not match the process but had they passed on quarterback altogether, it would have been even more regrettable.
While Mitch Trubisky gets all of the heat for being a bad pick, let’s take a look at the other teams in the top ten.
The 49ers went into the 2017 season with Brian Hoyer and C.J. Beathard as their quarterbacks yet they get applauded for drafting Solomon Thomas over Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson. The 9ers surely did bounce back from this mistake, but they also wish they had Mahomes.
The Jaguars rode into 2017 with Blake Bortles and drafted Leonard Fournette. Bortles is long gone, and Fournette is on the way as well. They had a one year run, similar to Trubisky. Still, a team needed a quarterback and took a running back. Corey Davis went 5th overall to a team that had Marcus Mariota. It is another team that Patrick Mahomes beat in the playoffs as well.
The Jets picked sixth overall and they no longer have Jamal Adams on their team. They took Adams over Patrick Mahomes despite entering the season with Josh McCown and Bryce Petty as their quarterbacks. They start a long rebuild with the trade of Adams.
Mike Williams and John Ross round out the top ten. Maybe both would be a bit better if their teams drafted a quarterback. They also are on teams that do not have the same quarterback entering 2017 as they do entering 2020. The Chicago Bears are the only team that does. That is why taking quarterback is always the right move, even if it may not be the right one.
