How will the Chicago Bears run game be fixed?

Saying that the run game needs to be “fixed” may be somewhat of an exaggeration. David Montgomery had a relatively strong rookie season and it looks like there’s a high ceiling between him and Tarik Cohen. The issue, for the most part, was Matt Nagy’s stubbornness in sticking to the run game throughout the season.

Chicago found plenty of success in games that Montgomery ran the ball, winning three of four games where he exceeded 20 rushes. Despite this, Nagy seemed hesitant to hand over a bulk of the work on this end of the ball. Again, the offensive line is still a bit of a question mark, so these two will likely succeed or fall together.

But the question as to whether or not Bill Lazor can be a strong offensive coordinator remains unsolved. He inherited one of the worst offenses in the league when he took over in Cincinnati and failed to improve it. That being said, he’ll have much more to work within Chicago, so this is another question that won’t be answered until the season starts.

The running game took a back seat to the tight end position and offensive line, but at least some steps were taken to fix it. We’ll have to wait and see if the play calling and effectiveness improve this coming season.
