Chicago Bears: Thoughts on linebackers after press conference
The heart of the Chicago Bears defense.
The Chicago Bears recently spoke with the heart of the defense Danny Trevathan and rising star Roquan Smith. After some videos surfaced about Roquan Smith, he does indeed look leaner. While Smith, to me, doesn’t look like he added any size, he seems more like a hard-hitting safety.
When Smith was asked how much weight he put on, Smith explained that he put on a couple of pounds. I am not sure if the Chicago Bears asked him to lose weight or if it was something he just wanted to do.
The Chicago Bears signed Josh Woods, an undrafted free agent back in 2018. Woods played safety but was converted to inside linebacker from day one. Since the Chicago Bears drafted Roquan Smith as their first-round investment, it’s not hard to believe that they might prefer at least one of the off-ball linebacker positions to be a hybrid type of build and player. When asked about playing in a mask, Smith stated that it is pretty easy to practice while wearing a mask.
Back on the weight topic, Smith added that during camp. He tends to lose a couple of pounds, so he wanted to add a couple for safe measure. Smith also shared that he was around 234 when he entered training camp. Smith played at about 230 last season. Maybe I am just stuck on him looking less massive, but as long as he feels and plays fast, the actual weight won’t matter. What I do love about Smith is how confident he is with himself.
Roquan Smith was asked if he feels like he could gain anything now that he gets to go through his second training camp since he missed his rookie training camp. Smith just brushed it off like the question was irrelevant. If a player comes to training camp in shape and confident, then they will mostly succeed in a summary of what Smith responded with saying. Roquan Smith is all about being the best player he can be when he’s talking to media remembers.
