5 winners from Chicago Bears 2020 training camp week 1
-
Kevin Toliver
The tight ends have received major praise, but no player has seen his stock rise more than Kevin Toliver. Entering the summer, Toliver was set to compete with Artie Burns and Jaylon Johnson for starting reps on the outside.
However, early into camp, Artie Burns saw an ACL tear end his season early. Jaylon Johnson has yet to even start his season with shoulder issues. Toliver went from being in a competition to being in a one-man show as a starter.
It is never fun to win the job due to injury, but Toliver has to recognize that there is a lot on the line here with his play to start the season. If he can push off Johnson, he can buy a rookie who is far behind the time he needs, and he can put out a tape that will impress GMs and scouts.
It is worth noting that Buster Skrine has competed for outside snaps as well, with Duke Shelley sliding into the slot. Still, Toliver is likely to start week one, and that is a big win for a player who was not sure where his status was a month ago.
