Tashaun Gipson is in a training camp competition with Deon Bush. The Chicago Bears may have their decision made due to an injury
One of the tighter training camp competitions for the Chicago Bears has been Deon Bush competing with Tashaun Gipson for starting safety snaps. When Gipson was signed, many thought he would earn the job, but the Bears have been committed to making this a true competition.
So far, the reports out of camp have been positive towards Bush making this a legitimate battle. With two weeks until training camp, Bush has a leg up in terms of having years spent with Eddie Jackson and being in the Chuck Pagano defense just last season. Tashaun Gipson is playing catch up.
So, when the report came out that Gipson missed practice with a back injury, it has to be noted. Gipson is already behind in on the field reps, and he needs to catch up. This is giving Deon Bush valuable snaps next to Jackson, and giving him a chance to earn the coach’s trust before week one.
Beyond that, it was injuries that derailed the end of Gipson’s runs with the Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars. It could be a veteran’s day off for Gipson, but the question becomes whether he can afford to miss that time so close to the season.
Gipson could return tomorrow and jump right in with the starters. He could look refreshed, and this weekend could be the moment that he takes the job by storm. Still, for the moment, if this were a boxing match, Deon Bush would have won two of the first three rounds.
