What happens if either quarterback wins and plays badly?
If Trubisky or Foles wins and plays badly, it’s simple. All that happens is the other quarterback comes in and the Bears move on from Trubisky after this season. It would be greatly unfortunate if the former second overall pick failed, but it is a reality we need to prepare for.
This would likely mean that both quarterbacks would play in games, depending on how Foles and Trubisky play. You could see both quarterbacks playing in four to 12 games. It’s a wide margin, but it’s all dependent on who is the hot hand and when they struggle.
Because of the uncertainty riding who plays well, the Bears could be anywhere from 4 wins to 10 wins. It is very unlikely the Bears win four games with their current defense, but anything is possible with a poor offense. This defense could carry the incompetent quarterback play to the playoffs, but it’s a big question mark.
This would strengthen the choice of the Bears trading for Foles. Regardless, it’s good to have two quarterbacks that are high-end backup quarterbacks at the worst. Even if Foles does bad, he can be the bridge quarterback for the next rookie quarterback.
