The Chicago Bears moved Eddy Pineiro to injured-reserve, Cairo Santos to kick

Looking back at Matt Nagy’s comments about insurance policies and such, clearly, the Chicago Bears were worried then about Eddy Pineiro. Not from a lack-of-talent standpoint, but he was unable to kick all throughout training camp due to a groin injury. That alone must be concerning since he dealt with one last season too. This is why Ryan Pace and Nagy brought in Cairo Santos.

Once Santos was not kept on the final roster, everyone (including Santos) knew the Bears were going to put him on the practice squad because Nagy told us the plan in a press conference. As of yesterday, the team moved Pineiro to injured-reserve to make room on the roster for Mario Edwards.

I had a feeling Pineiro could have been the guy moved to clear space for Edwards. The thought was it would be Pineiro to injured-reserve, send Jason Spriggs to injured-reserve because he too was also dealing with an injury, or cut Eric Saubert. The problem is, now the team also needs to promote Santos from the practice squad before Sunday. This means, one of the other two moves (Saubert or Spriggs) will likely happen anyway.

When will Pineiro be back to kicking for the Chicago Bears?

With the new injured-reserve rule to help deal with COVID-19, the Chicago Bears can bring Eddy Pineiro back to the active roster in Week 4. The problem for Pineiro is, will the Bears want to re-activate him?

Next. How Bears vs. Packers games tell all. dark

Cairo Santos has a bit of history with Nagy. They spent four years together as part of the Kansas City Chiefs. Nagy spoke about how he recalls never being worried when the team was lined up for a field goal. There is definitely an admiration for Santos’ work, as long as he performs well over the first three weeks of the season, the Bears may not make the switch back to Pineiro. What if it is even worse than that though? What if the Bears decide to release him instead?
