Chicago Bears secondary starters confirmed
There was a question as to who would be starting at safety and cornerback for the Chicago Bears in Week One, but it has been answered
Coming into the summer, the Chicago Bears were set to have a competition to replace Prince Amukamara and Haha Clinton-Dix. While the expected starters were Jaylon Johnson and Tashaun Gipson, both had a differing set of hurdles to overcome.
Jaylon Johnson was banged up for the beginning of training camp. Considering he was a rookie who missed all of his offseason programs, all of the preseason, and most of the training camp, it was fair to question if he would be ready for Week One.
However, with Artie Burns injured, and Kevin Toliver waived, his competition seemed to dwindle. He announced that he is planning to start this week, ending the debate.
Tashaun Gipson is a veteran who had a firmer grip on the job. However, the Chicago Bears were adamant that he was in competition with Deon Bush. Reports out of training camp noted that Bush was getting a serious look. Some even speculated that the familiarity that Bush provides could give him an inside edge.
However, similar to Johnson, Gipson announced that it would be him starting, and the chalk heading into camp played out.
There are still some questions as to whether or not the Bears will have Buster Skrine play outside in two corner situations, and bring Johnson in to play outside in nickel situations. Still, with Johnson announcing him starting, it could be implied he will be the number two corner.
The Bears also may move to more three safety looks, which the NFL has trended towards. That would mean a lot of mixing and matching from Gipson and Bush, which could blur the lines a bit. We will see soon enough.
