Chicago Bears: A fans rant regarding the team’s defense
The concern but not fear of this defense
The heart and soul of Chicago Bears football are supposed to be with the defense. This Chicago Bears defense is supposed to be a top unit this season. I am not going to freak out just yet, and neither should you; however, I noticed some things that I would like to talk about. First, Danny Trevathan looked very slow-footed. Khalil Mack was taken care of with single blocking assignments (one of which was tight end T.J. Hockenson).
The defensive line did not have a lot of push. That could be a credit to the Lions protection in both the run and pass game. Or it is going to be hard to replace Eddie Goldman. Oh, Chuck Pagano, Chuck Pagano. What are you doing? As I shouted at the television, “don’t try to out cover Stafford,” what does Pagano do? He rushed three defenders and attempted to play coverage instead of pressuring Stafford into rushing his throw.
Remember, in 2018, when Vic Fangio sent a big blitz against the Cardinals so Josh Rosen wouldn’t have time to throw deep. Yeah, do that next time, Pagano. Luckily for us fans, Swift dropped what likely would have been a game-winning touchdown. Not all was bad with the defense, though.
The defensive backs and Roquan Smith looked in shape, competent, and ready to play. Had it not been for Jaylon Johnson (not Eddie Jackson, although he did help), Kyle Fuller would have never had a shot to intercept the tipped ball.
