Chicago Bears’ Round 2, Pick No. 49

Reid has the Bears doubling down with the Minnesota Gophers’ prospects selecting another one in back-to-back rounds. This time, the Bears address a major issue on their team which is offensive tackle.

The offensive tackles haven’t been horrible this season, but they haven’t been anything to brag about either. Bobby Massie has shown much improvement from his 2019 campaign. Charles Leno has too, but his run-blocking has still been very suspect. Both of these offensive tackles are locked down through 2022, but Massie is aging and Daniel Faalele could be groomed as the replacement.

Faalele is a freak of nature, to say the least. Standing at 6′ 9″ and weighing 400 pounds, there aren’t many guys in the NFL as big as him. What would make him a perfect fit for the Bears is also his mobility with his size. He moves his hips extremely well and that would bode well in the Bears run blocking scheme. This stems from his rugby background from when he lived in Australia. It’s also worth noting that he never played football until high school.

His size proves to be a huge advantage in every aspect of the game. He can also play both right and left tackle. Faalele could be the guy who takes over for who struggles the most and could be the tackle of the future.

The only issue I have with this pick is he isn’t an immediate impact player. Given the Bears’ current pick, they are likely still pushing for playoffs. I would prefer to get an instant starter at say, inside linebacker, or whatever position struggles the most.
