Chicago Bears: 3 Free agent running backs to consider signing to replace Tarik Cohen
Could Matt Nagy bring in the familiar face of Spencer Ware?
Now that we know Kerrith Whyte is not my favorite of the three, I should point out that Spencer Ware is easily my favorite of the three. First of all, Ware is familiar with the offense that Matt Nagy runs. Second, he is used to playing the secondary role and the primary role in a running back room. This means he could even step in if David Montgomery were to get hurt.
His familiarity with the offense would allow him to step in fairly easily and quickly too. If signed today, he could probably be up to speed soon enough to contribute in Week 4 versus the Colts. At the very worst he’d be fully ready be Week 5.
Ware has also proven he is a dual-threat too. In 2016, Ware caught 33 of 42 targets for 447 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Ware followed that up in 2018 by catching 20 of 23 targets for 224 yards. He missed the entire 2017 season and only played in three games in 2019.
Ware might be my favorite of the three due to his experience as a versatile back who already has familiarity with the offense, but he might not be the best of the three to take over Tarik Cohen’s role. Instead, this next option might be the best choice.
