Chicago Bears: Must-watch college quarterbacks before 2021 Draft
Mobile and fun thrower
Why should the Chicago Bears be looking at D’Eriq King? King is short runs way too much. I feel a lot would be scared that he is a run-first quarterback with the ability to throw. I wanted to list only tall pocket passing quarterbacks because that seems to be the Matt Nagy way.
Still, I remembered that he brought in Mason Fine for a tryout and brought Chase Daniel in as a backup quarterback for Mitch Trubisky when Matt Nagy was a rookie head coach. While I think he loves tall quarterbacks who can see the whole field, I believe the key is, see the entire field. And that is what King does well.
I am not going to call King Russell Wilson, because he is not. The University of Houston started using King as a do-everything quarterback who is very odd. I have seen him kick return, throw passes, play running back, and wide receiver.
The thing that makes him useful and hard to grade. Using a quarterback, that way is not ideal. However, King now is with the University of Miami, and they can see what the kid can do. King’s deep ball is excellent. You hardly see a receiver have to slow down or chase an overthrown ball when he is attacking.
King’s head is always moving when he stays in the pocket. This kid understands running lanes as a runner and passing lanes from playing both quarterback and receiver. I love that Maimi has seen this kid as a quarterback. King is completing almost 67% of his passes and has six passing touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Miami’s running back averages 3.8 YPC, so King has not had any help from that part of the game, winning every game this season. It is still very early, but Miami has already won half of the games they did last season; D’Eriq King is the main reason they are good.
