Cody Whitehair is usually one of the most reliable centers in the NFL. That was not the case for the Chicago Bears Sunday

The Chicago Bears can depend on Cody Whitehair to be one of their most reliable players through thick and thin. From Mike Glennon to Mitch Trubisky, Chase Daniel, and Nick Foles, Whitehair has been there. He moved to guard and did fine, and moved back to center and did even better. That is the type of player he is.

However, every once in a while he is going to have a down game. On Sunday, that was the case. We noted before the game that Indianapolis Colts’ defensive line was not to be discounted. Unfortunately, Whitehair and company were not up to snuff.

It started on the first run of the game. Look at Whitehair get blown up off of the line of scrimmage and pushed into the backfield. The run was blown up and the tone was set from there.

Grover Stewart does not collect sacks, or make plays in the backfield. He is a true nose tackle like Eddie Goldman. On Sunday, the Chicago Bears saw the value of an underrated run clogging nose tackle. Watch the play below as Stewart once again blows up Whitehair. He pushes him back and also disengaged to make the play in the backfield.

The rest of the interior had their hands full with DeForest Buckner, so to see Whitehair fail with Stewart was devastating to the group. Whitehair not only struggled throughout with the run game, but he also gave up three pressures, which in his worst pass-blocking game of the season as well.

In fact, according to PFF, this was one of the five worst games that Whitehair has played in his five-year career. That is a testament to the type of player that Whitehair is that this does not happen often. It also is a sign of just how poor this performance was.

Next. Week 4 over reactions. dark

Whitehair averages one of this per year, and it typically does come once every year where we just do not see the same Whitehair we expect to see. Grover Stewart may be underrated and add to it. However, this was a rare poor Cody Whitehair performance.
