The refusal to change is absurd
Do the Chicago Bears need an identity? It is funny how Matt Nagy kept sharing how the team needed to find an identity in 2019. Yet, Nagy expresses the Chicago Bears heritage as tough, fast, and defensively sound when it comes to the defense.
He has shared how he sees how that could be this team now. But on the ball’s offensive side, he still isn’t sure what that identity should be. Under John Fox, the Chicago Bears ran a very boring run, run, pass styled offense. Fox might have had a very boring offense, but he had an identity and stuck to it.
The Chicago Bear fan base got to fall in love with the player who led the charge, Jordan Howard. The Chicago Bears were not winning games under John Fox, but that was not because they didn’t have an identity or a plan. They didn’t have enough talent yet.
In the 15 games Howard played in his rookie year, the Bears scored 20 points or more in six of them. In 2018 the Bears had 13 games in which they scored 20 or more points. Yes, a lot of that was a defensive score, but that also shows what an identity looks like.
In 2017 Howard beat the AFC north division by himself, rushing for 498 yards and six touchdowns against those four teams. That is an identity. Nagy gave that up for a burrito just like the Texans coach gave up their star talent, aiding them to their 0-4 start of this season.
How does this all tie in with Ryan Pace? That is pretty simple. Ryan pace interviewed a very few select coaches and let the interview dictate who he would hire. I am not completely out on Nagy, but he needs to do more self-scouting of himself. I don’t know if Bill Lazor calling plays will help, but sometimes the pride needs to be let go.
