Can Chicago Bears trust Alex Bars?
The Chicago Bears are going to need Alex Bars to step up
The most disappointing news from the Chicago Bears win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was the injury status of James Daniels. Daniels went down late in the first half and did not return. As it turned out, Daniels was sidelined with a pec injury that will end his 2020 season.
The depth of the Bears offensive line is one of the biggest questions on the roster, so it certainly brings up a huge question about who will replace Daniels. On Thursday, it was UDFA Alex Bars, who redshirted his rookie season due to an injury.
Bars got rocked immediately by Vita Vea, giving up a sack on the first drive that he came in. However, it is fair to note that Vea is one of the better nose tackles in the NFL. After his welcome to the NFL moment, you did not hear as much about Bars, which is a good thing.
To be fair, the Bears game planned around it with quick passes to the flats, and an abandonment of the running game. Still, they put Bars in better positions to succeed, and after his first major gaffe, you did not see any mistakes moving forward.
The Chicago Bears have Rashaad Coward, but he has only played right tackle and guard. He has never played any offensive line position on the left side. They have Arlington Hambright, but while Bars is a UDFA in year two, Hambright is a late seventh-round pick in his rookie season without an offseason. There is a reason Bars came in over these two on Thursday.
The Bears could obviously sign a name as well. This is the most likely scenario if they do not feel as though Bars is ready to compete. However, for now, the idea looks to be that Bars is going to be the man. Fans have been waiting to see what a draft sleeper could turn into, and now he will get plenty of NFL snaps to prove himself.
