1. Jonah Jackson

This is another question as to whether they should have taken Jonah Jackson or Cole Kmet. Long term we may see this differently. However, at the time Jonah Jackson was enticing, and as we sit here today, he looks pretty good as well. The Detroit Lions nabbed 28 picks later, which does show that he would have been a reach. However, as noted Kmet may have been a reach as well.

In the case of Jackson, he would have helped the line. Jackson has started at left guard for the Lions but has played right guard as well. Moving around to two spots and playing well as a rookie is a good sign for him moving forward.

Of course, it also would have been an upgrade on the interior for Chicago.

It is not just taking Kmet over Lewis and Jackson. It is not just trading for Gipson rather than getting a few spots higher for Dotson. It is not the complete misevaluation of passing Onwenu altogether.

It is the combination and the clear thought process that the offensive line did not need help that is troubling. It was insanely obvious at the time that this would come back to haunt them and it is stunning that they did not invest more in the depth of their line to plan for this.
