The Chicago Bears need a more decisive play-caller

Unfortunately, for Nagy, he has lacked the capacity to admit to himself all that he needed to acknowledge in order to make himself the best version of himself as a play-caller. Sports executives who get promoted to higher levels of responsibility have put themselves into a fishbowl. They all make their mistakes as they learn on the job.

These missteps are there for all to see. An essential part to succeeding at these jobs is learning from mistakes made. From the outside looking in, it does not appear, so far, that Matt Nagy is learning enough from his mistakes. Perhaps, giving up play-calling duties for a time would be the first step to accelerating his learning curve.

In terms of the bigger picture just imagine what this Bears team could do if their offense was not stuck in first or second gear most of the time. This Chicago Bears offense has clearly shown they play much better with an uptempo game. However, the uptempo game does not suit Nagy’s pattern of often changing personnel during drives.

This team needs a play-caller who will, regularly, shift them into third and fourth gear. Matt Nagy is doing what more than a few offensive head coaches have done in the past. That is he has NOT taken his basic schemes and offensive philosophy and tailored them to fit the strengths of his players on offense. So, of course, the result is a mishmash of an offense that goes hot and cold but more cold than hot.
