What to do with this offensive line

Jim Miller, the former Chicago Bears quarterback, does pre and post-game Bears commentary. For myself, he is the gold standard when it comes to analyzing the Bears offense. He believes the best offensive lineup includes Sam Mustipher at center, Cody Whitehair at left guard and Germain Ifedi on the bench.

Rashaad Coward and Germain Ifedi keep making dumb mistakes. In order for Interior offensive lineman to be really good, they need to be mentally sharp to make quick decisions. I just do not see this is in these two guys and apparently Jim Miller does not see it in Germain Ifedi as well.

Eric Kush has become a last-minute entry into the Bears offensive line sweepstakes. It was announced that he is now on the Bears practice squad. He has played for the Bears in 2017 and 2018 at both left and right guard. 2018 was Matt Nagy’s first year as the Bears head coach. It is possible but probably unlikely, Kush will be activated for the Bears’ next game which is against the Vikings. However, he could play against the Packers on November 29th.

Cody Whitehair is also unlikely to play against the Vikings. So then let’s see how effective Arlington Hambright can be at left guard. This Bear Goggles On article showed how Hambright learned from a mistake he made earlier in the Titans game. Learning from their mistakes is not something I have seen from Charles Leno, Rashaad Coward or Germain Ifedi.

Alex Bars had his best season in college as a right guard for Notre Dame. This lineup below as far as I can tell gives the Bears the best combination of intelligence and toughness on their interior line. If by the Packers game the Chicago Bears can field this lineup on the offensive line, it should be good enough to enable the Bears offense to function, reasonably, well.

Getting back to defense for a second, the Bears defensive starters have finally shown that their conditioning is up to speed. With that major obstacle removed, they only have one remaining obstacle keeping them from having the best defense in the NFC. That obstacle is their struggling offense and its bad habit of way too often having an abundance of three and outs.

If their offense can keep the Bears defenders relatively fresh, their defense can contain any offense in the NFC. If Coach Nagy makes the gutsy move to surrender his play-calling duties, I believe the entire team will respond with the fervor of a starving man wolfing down a good meal.

Next. The Bears fan base needs to calm down. dark

Changing the guard at offensive play-caller along with having a talented defense that is now peaking could possibly transform the Bears into the leading contender in the NFC. The Chicago Bears might be much closer to being a Super Bowl worthy team than anyone is willing to believe at this time.
