Chicago Bears: Mitch Trubisky deserves a longer leash this time
The Chicago Bears seem to be making the switch back to Mitch Trubisky
With the Nick Foles injury nearly two weeks ago, reports are that Mitch Trubisky has received all of the snaps in practice while Foles has been unavailable. Matt Nagy has listed Foles as day-to-day and has yet to announce who will be starting when the Chicago Bears suit up on Sunday night.
The thing is, Mitch Trubisky should get the nod whether Foles is healthy or not. Foles has been absolutely awful in Nagy’s offense. It seems that Nagy was overly excited to pull the plug on Trubisky in the third game versus the Falcons because Nagy wanted to see his shiny new toy in action. He thought Foles would bring stability to a very unstable offense. The thing is, Foles has looked just as bad, if not worse than Trubisky.
Nagy also has changed up his scheme once he made the switch from Trubisky to Foles. There have been fewer under-center snaps and less play-action with Foles playing quarterback. With the switch, the run game has suffered drastically.
While Trubiksy has been slinging the rock, the team averaged nearly five yards per carry. With Foles throwing the pigskin, the team has averaged less than three yards per carry. Some of that comes from Trubisky’s ability to run himself while Foles looks like a statue, but now that we have seen how bad the offense is as a whole (not completely Trubisky’s nor Foles’ fault), there’s no reason not to give Trubisky the ball on Sunday night versus the Packers.
Mitch Trubisky should see a longer leash this time
Furthermore, now that we know Trubisky was not the main problem, and the offensive line is in shambles, putting him behind the line is probably best. He at least has the ability to run and brings a separate threat to the game plan. The Chicago Bears and Matt Nagy need to give him a longer leash than they did early in the year.
Over the last six games, seeing what Mitch Trubisky can do is more important than seeing what Foles can do. Neither will make much of a difference and this team has no chance of going deep into the playoffs let alone even make them.
Foles has thrown 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He has also fumbled the ball twice. Mitch Trubisky on the other hand threw six touchdowns to only three interceptions in just over two games. He fumbled the ball once during that span. Now, they played different defenses, but it’s not like Foles was seeing elite defenses every week. Twice the offense could not score a touchdown in a game. This offense is awful, but putting Trubisky in right now makes sense.
This is not a Mitch Trubisky is better than Foles argument. However, making this move could spark the offense. This is a Mitch Trubisky can run the scheme that Nagy used to start the season better than Foles and was actually working argument. Maybe going back to it is what this team needs. More details on the two schemes will be coming tomorrow. Make sure to check back to read it. Until then, Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
