The Chicago Bears must instill muscle memory into Mitch Trubisky

However, I have found a way to fix Mitch Trubisky’s footwork. Bears’ coaches can attack this muscle memory issue starting in the Packers game and continuing throughout the season. Not that I expect them to do this but this is what they could do.

It starts with explaining to Trubisky that in the first quarter they are going to call and scheme up a number of medium-length passes to free up some pass targets. These medium-length passes will be mixed in with run plays that will also set up play action. Focusing on him throwing medium-length passes makes the throw long enough to develop muscle memory without him having to ask his pass protectors to hold onto their blocks for a lengthy period of time.

The key to this plan working is for everyone to be all-in on making this work. They need to imprint into Mitch Trubisky’s brain that they are game planning this not to just move the chains but to also fix his mechanics. They want, no they need Trubisky to make certain if at all humanly possible to make each throw by taking a small crow step forward before releasing the ball.

Putting so much focus and game planning into this issue should make a major impact on Trubisky’s progressing in improving his footwork. He probably does not even need to be told that following these instructions could save his career. However, it would not hurt to mention it.

This muscle memory matter is the fulcrum point to turning around Trubisky’s career and the Bears season. There is a reason I am absolutely convinced this will work. Since 2019, I have taken the time to review the footwork of each of his passes that were 10 yards or longer. When he is on target, he takes that all-important crow step. This step sets up the optimization of his release point and arm angle to make an accurate throw, especially, downfield.

What Mitch Trubisky will typically do on a bad pass is be flat-footed and all too often he will also have his feet far apart before releasing the ball. Of course, there will be plenty of times a quarterback’s footwork will need to be compromised to get the pass off. However, in observing Trubisky he often has the time to take a step forward but still remains flat-footed. This has very often, led to a flatter pass when a ball with more loft is needed to make the completion.

This small step also makes it easier for a quarterback to put more force behind the ball if that is what’s needed to complete the pass. Trubisky’s miscues are discouraging to be sure. However, he has dropped some absolute dimes when his mechanics are on point and many of them have been in clutch situations. This is why he is worth this extra effort by the Bears coaching staff. If ever there was a time when Mitch Trubisky needed the Bears, and the Bears needed Mitch Trubisky this is it.
