Chicago Bears: 3 Areas Mitch Trubisky must prove to earn another contract
Mitch Trubisky must show improvement in his decision making for the Bears
The main criticism of Mitch Trubisky has been his inability to read defenses and make the correct reads. Through three seasons, we saw growth in his first two years and regression in his third year. This hampered the Bears’ playoff hopes last year due to their stagnant offense, and it is the same story this year. The only difference now is that Nick Foles is going through the same struggles.
Still, Foles is an intelligent football player who can diagnose defenses with the best of quarterbacks. The Bears gave up on Mitch Trubisky in favor of the veteran who would be able to make the right reads and throws. Unfortunately, it has not worked out great and Trubisky finds himself at the helm again.
Mitch Trubisky needs to be able to diagnose coverages, blitzes, and schemes in order to be successful. Hopefully, he has learned from watching Foles and can be smarter in his decision-making process.
A big reason Trubisky was benched was that he was consistently throwing the ball into tight spaces and was unable to see open players. Against the Lions in Week 1, he had Jimmy Graham wide open for what could have been a considerable gain. However, he opted to throw into triple coverage to Allen Robinson, who made a spectacular catch to bail out Trubisky. Decisions like these, as well as poor blitz diagnosis, led to the Bears benching him.
If he is going to create a valuable market around his name, he needs to demonstrate development in his abilities to read and adapt to defensive schemes. Nobody is asking him to be Aaron Rodgers, but he needs to be able to know where the open receivers are going to be instead of forcing the ball and should be able to adapt to what defenses are throwing at him.
