Chicago Bears: How the defense is hurting this franchise
By Nathan Burns
The Chicago Bears top-five defense has gotten them nowhere
The defense should be the last thing on fans’ minds when it comes to critiquing the team. Yet in a deranged way, it is a problem. The Chicago Bears currently sit with a record of 5-5 and have lost their last 4 games. They are now heading to Green Bay to face Aaron Rodgers and the Packers on Sunday Night Football. I’m no fortune teller, but the odds of the Bears beating Green Bay at Lambeau are very slim.
Assuming the Bears lose on Sunday night, they will then sit at 5-6. This would mean that they will have lost 5 games in a row. The only reason they have 5 wins is due to the defense keeping them in every game. The Bears could easily be 3-8 if it wasn’t for the Falcons choking and D’Andre Swift dropping the game-winner in Week 1.
Although the defense has been good, it’s hurting the Chicago Bears when it comes to future draft picks. There isn’t much tanking in the NFL, so I’m not saying they should try to lose. All I’m saying is that the defense playing well is actually hurting the Bears in the long run. Even when they were 5-1, everyone knew they weren’t a 5-1 team.
Any realistic Bears fan knows that this team isn’t going anywhere this season. They have no offensive line and the coaching has been horrible. Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy are both on the hot seat and could even be let go after the season. After years and years of bolstering the defense, the Bears have failed to put a great offense on the field.
The Bears need to get with the times and stop relying on their defense. I always use to hear “defense wins championships”. Although that might have been the case before, a great defense just doesn’t cut it anymore.
