Chicago Bears reach for quarterback in seven-round mock draft
By Joseph Herff
Round 5, Pick No. 153
Unless Allen Robinson gets franchise tagged next season, it is likely he will be seeing the door after not receiving a contract extension from Ryan Pace that he felt suited his value. With his departure, that leaves just Javon Wims on the roster as the true “big-man” wide receiver. Wims has shown he can block well on the outside but hasn’t shown much as a wide receiver.
Clearly, it will be hard to replace Robinson with a fifth-round pick, but Damon Hazelton wouldn’t be expected to start right away and could earn his way to a job. Hazelton is a great fit to take over as a jump-ball physical wide receiver. He has extremely strong hands and has an impressive catch radius to win many jump balls over cornerbacks.
Hazelton is now on his third college team over his career, which is a bit concerning. He transferred from Ball State to Virginia Tech and now is a graduate student at Missouri. He isn’t going to burn a corner as Darnell Mooney can, but that really isn’t his job.
Hazelton now has gotten active playing time in four seasons in college football, but never really has dominated the stat sheet as this season he only has 25 catches for 322 yards and one touchdown. In his defense, he is on a new team and couldn’t learn the offense as fast with the pandemic. In the two seasons prior, he had eight touchdowns in both of them.
