Chicago Bears: 5 Landing spots for Mitch Trubisky in free agency
By Braden Fogal
Mitch Trubisky steps in as injury-riddled Jimmy Garoppolo’s backup.
No. 2 – San Francisco 49ers
The weather out in California sure is nicer than it is in Chicago. Trubisky could find a new home in San Francisco to play for Kyle Shanahan as an insurance option to Jimmy Garoppolo. The 49ers are set to pay the former Eastern Illinois quarterback $48.3 million over the next two seasons in base salary alone. The team has a pretty substantial winning record when Garoppolo actually plays, but unfortunately, that has become less often than not.
This is another low-pressure situation that Mitch Trubisky could step into. Nick Mullens has been a serviceable backup for the 49ers, but his future is uncertain as of right now hitting free agency in 2021. It’s difficult to grade San Francisco’s performance this year with all the injuries and positive COVID-19 cases they’ve had to deal with.
The bottom line here is that the 49ers have a great defense when healthy — it’s just a matter of regaining health on the offense. Trubisky could easily step in and find comfortable receiving options in George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. Not to mention Shanahan likes to run the ball with option and gadget plays, so Trubisky’s mobility could certainly factor in nicely here.
This would be an extremely difficult division for Mitch Trubisky to step into when playing six NFC West games against Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray and Jared Goff. Perhaps, a change in weather could bring out the best in the former first-rounder.
