Chicago Bears: 5 Landing spots for Mitch Trubisky in free agency
By Braden Fogal
Mitch Trubisky signs in Pittsburgh to replace aging Big Ben
No. 1 – Pittsburgh Steelers
Quite possibly the best landing spot for Trubisky is to play under Mike Tomlin by representing the black and yellow. The Steelers are an 11-1 team winning games with their defense and leaning on a 38-year-old Ben Roethlisberger behind center. Tomlin has a great rapport of coaching his team to success no matter who his quarterback is.
The 2019 Steelers might be the best example of that when Tomlin’s team finished 8-8 despite Mason Rudolph being his starter for a majority of the season. Pittsburgh’s steel curtain presents the best defense on this list and a dream landing spot for the former Chicago Bear.
Trubisky would walk into another low-pressure situation with receiving threats such as Chase Claypool, Diontae Johnson, James Washington and JuJu Smith-Schuster depending on if the Steelers extend him during the offseason. Let’s say they don’t because the ceilings of Claypool and Johnson are that high.
Replacing Alejandro Villanueva on the offensive line will be a key point of emphasis for Pittsburgh after the season, but it can’t be underestimated how much better the Steelers organization has protected Big Ben towards the back half of his career. If Mitch Trubisky played all 16 games for the Bears in 2020 then he would be on pace to take 52 sacks. Pittsburgh’s offensive line hasn’t allowed a single sack through 13 weeks of the season.
If you’re Tomlin and the Steelers front office then you need a better answer behind Big Ben. No more Rudolph or Joshua Dobbs, who is leaving in free agency anyway. Trubisky is used to playing in the cold and has shown potential at this point in his career.
