3. Defensive End Mario Edwards

In a season where fans have questioned whether or not players have quit on their coach and seen several guys seemingly take some plays off, one guy who has stood out is defensive end, Mario Edwards.

There has never been a lack of effort on Edwards’ part this season. He’s on his third team in three years, and you can tell he desires to find a more permanent home. His motor has been running and running strong.

Playing 23 percent of the defensive snaps so far this year, Edwards has accounted for a pair of sacks, four tackles for loss, four quarterback hits and even has a pass defended — something he hasn’t done since his rookie season back in 2015 with the Raiders.

Edwards is still just 26 years old, and as a former second-rounder out of Florida State, has plenty of football ahead of him, along with being able to reach an even higher level of play.

This season has been a challenge for the defensive line, without Eddie Goldman, but Edwards has been one of the key guys to step up and play very well. Pace brought him in on a 1-year deal, but he’s earned every bit of a new contract and more playing time going forward.

If the Bears want to keep some depth intact along their front from this season, Edwards must be back. There is no reason not to re-sign him with the year he’s had.
