Chicago Bears: Does Mitch Trubisky deserve a new contract?
By Joseph Herff
Is Mitch Trubisky playing himself into a new contract?
Entering the 2020 season, the Chicago Bears created themselves a quarterback controversy. They declined Mitch Trubisky‘s fifth-year option and traded for journeyman Nick Foles to compete with him for the starting job. Matt Nagy had a lot of praise for Foles as he knew the offense very well and had himself a Super Bowl ring with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Trubisky won himself the job. He earned it beating out Foles in training camp and got the start against the Detroit Lions to open the season. The warning though was that he would be on a very tight leash. As we saw, the leash was very tight.
Mitch Trubisky struggled early on as the entire Chicago Bears team did in Week 1 without a preseason, but Trubisky turned it on to comeback against the Lions and win thanks to a dime he threw to Anthony Miller for the go-ahead touchdown. After that, the Bears dominated the Giants early on before they got passive and almost blew their lead. In Week 3, Trubisky finally lost his job as they struggled to put up points against the Falcons, and in came Foles.
Foles looked great to start off as he led the Chicago Bears to an incredible comeback. He threw three touchdowns including a bomb to Miller to win. Nagy then named him the starter pulling Trubisky. That’s when the chaos slowly started.
Foles led them to impressive wins over the Buccaneers and Panthers, but after that, he started to get exposed for his weaknesses and Nagy’s offense couldn’t hide them. They struggled to put up anything against weak defenses like the Minnesota Vikings and Tennessee Titans. It wasn’t until an injury to Foles against the Vikings forced Nagy’s hand to give Trubisky his job back. Trubisky hasn’t looked back since.
