Chicago Bears free agent replacements for Allen Robinson: JuJu Smith-Schuster

Talk about a polarizing free agent, right? JuJu Smith-Schuster may not be back in Pittsburgh next season for multiple reasons. First and foremost, the Steelers are simply too good at drafting and developing wide receivers. They still have Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool and James Washington.

What makes it necessary to re-sign Smith-Schuster?

The other factor involved with this kid is the lack of maturity on his part. This is what worries me the most if the Bears were to entertain the idea of signing him. Smith-Schuster has been more of a social media star this year than he has a football star. At times, he disappeared. But, he still made time to dance on opposing teams’ logos for a while there.

In 2018, Smith-Schuster caught a ridiculous 111 passes for 1,426 yards and seven touchdowns. He truly looked like a top-10 guy ready to be locked and loaded for the next decade. But, in 2019, his numbered dropped dramatically down to 42 catches for 552 yards and three touchdowns.

It may not have seemed like it, but Smith-Schuster did end up with 97 receptions in 2020, for 831 yards and a career-best nine receiving touchdowns. His 8.6 yards per reception was uncharacteristic based on his previous three years and also pretty gross to look at. But, he was actually not bad this last season. His antics received more headlines than his actual play, though.
